I know I need to get started… I’m just waiting for the ‘right time.’

Sound familiar? This is a sentiment many people share when thinking about improving their health, nutrition, and fitness. A sense that creates an illusion that you have to do everything perfectly to achieve success. A feeling that usually results in a further decline in your health and fitness.

Let me ask you a question…

Are you waiting on the ‘perfect time’ to eat better, move better, and finally make progress towards your fitness goals?

Not sure? Well, let’s see if any of these phrases sound familiar:

  • When I get more time
  • When work isn’t so busy
  • When I find the right program
  • When I get a new job
  • When I get back from…
  • When I get the right equipment
  • When I feel more confident
  • When I lose a few more pounds on my own
  • Tomorrow. Monday. Next week. Next month.
  • After my birthday or some holiday

People are continually waiting for the ‘perfect time,’ but ask yourself why?

Well, if we are honest…

For most of us, it’s a way to distract, justify, and avoid putting in the work to make the changes we truly want.

The previous statement may sound a little crazy at first because who wants to avoid getting what they want.

The truth is, most people avoid taking action out of fear of potential criticism, embarrassment, and failure. So let’s be honest, telling yourself you don’t have time is the perfect armor to protect yourself from the pain of failure.

Unfortunately, it’s also what keeps you from growing, thriving, and living a life being fit and healthy.

That’s why waiting for the ‘perfect time’ usually results in you getting nothing. Worst, it leads you further down the road of poor health.

FACT: There will never be a perfect time.

Sure, there may be a moment in your life where the stars align and you can string together a few days or weeks even but sooner or later life will hit and that ‘perfect’ moment you thought you had will be gone. Someone will get sick, you’ll have to work late, get stuck in traffic, have to travel for work, or even go on vacation but in the end life will happen, and again you’ll find yourself back at square one waiting for the next perfect moment.

That’s the major flaw with waiting for that perfect moment…

There are just moments…

And perfect moments don’t provide you with the consistency you need to live a LIFE of health and fitness; it only gives you small glimpses of what could be…

Yes, we want to celebrate those moments but do realize that those moments will likely be spent undoing the damages done between the previous moment…

There is a better way.

The best thing you can do right now is to stop trying to be perfect and instead focus on making progress…

It’s also important to know that nobody is going to give you time, you have to make it. You have to make time for the things that matter MOST to you.

And if you don’t think that your health is important to you, well that’s a topic for another day 🙂

However, in terms of time, most of us will need to create it, hunt it, chase it, and do whatever we have to do to make it happen.

There are millions of people just like you who choose to make the time for their health. It’s not because they have more time than you; it’s because they understand how their health impacts ALL areas of their life and chose to create the time to focus on their health.

So today, I say this…

The perfect time to start is now

Here, today, right now you are living and breathing, and honestly, all you ever have is right now, so why not make the best of what you have?… right now.

How to start

Well, the good news is that it doesn’t take much work to get started.

All you have to do is… well, start.

It can be as simple as switching the creamer you use in your coffee to an alternative that has fewer calories and sugar.

It could be parking farther away from your job and taking the stair instead of the elevator.

It could be giving up sodas and drinking more water instead.

Starting means taking deliberate action towards making progress towards your health and fitness goals no matter how small.

As long as you are moving the needle forward, that’s a start.

Below are some tips to help you get started

Are you still waiting for the perfect time to start? Try these tips to get unstuck so that you can begin taking action today.

1. Change your expectations.

Realize that there is and will never be a perfect time to focus on your health and fitness. The only thing you have is now.

2. Make the time, even if small or imperfect.

Remember, nobody is going to give you time; you’ll have to take care of it yourself. Grant yourself permission you need to care for yourself and make your health and fitness goals a priority.

Find the time in your schedule and then schedule it! Don’t have an hour to workout, no sweat work with what you got even if it’s only 10 or 20 minutes.

Stop seeking perfection and understand that things won’t go smoothly in the beginning. Instead, anticipate and strategize by asking yourself questions like:

What’s distractions will likely interfere with what I hope to accomplish?

What can I commit to that will help me keep going with those challenges present themselves?

Instead of waiting for the perfect time or things to ‘slow down,’ take action and make something happen right now, even if it’s not perfect.

3. Just start.

When you feel stuck, sometimes the best thing to do is anything.

Seek out the smallest ‘thing’ you can do right now, within the next few minutes, and do it. Book, you just started!

Instead of focusing on the big mountain, focus on the next rock, you can climb right now. Forget being perfect, forget waiting for the ideal time, and forget all the reasons you think you can’t do something and commit to something small, something simple. Do something that is going to move you in the right direction to your goals.

Take action is a ‘vote’ that you for being healthier, fitter, and more vibrant.

4. Expect resistance.

Resistance is typical, with anything. Push through it because it all means that you’ve started, which is good.

It’s like pushing a car…

Its the hardest in the beginning, but once you get moving, it gets easier.

5. Get support.

Lone wolf vs. the wolf pack, who eats first?

Discover who is on your team and start building your support system. Whether friend, family, or co-workers, find people who will fire you up until you get the momentum going in your favor.
