Motivate yourself to stay hydrated

Water! It’s the liquid life source that makes up around 70% of our bodies. As healthy individuals, we should be aiming to drink at least 8 glasses of water every single day. That’s right, 8! Luckily, water is found in most foods and drinks, and therefore we shouldn’t be too pressed in glugging down glasses and glasses of H20. One thing to bear in mind, however, is that good ole’ (morning) friend of ours, caffeine. Unfortunately, drinks that contain a lot of caffeine such as coffee, tea, and soft drinks don’t quite have the same hydrating effect as other water-containing liquids. This is because caffeine is a mild diuretic. A scary word I know, but all that means is that water is sometimes not efficiently transported to areas of the body in which it is needed. In short, a glass of apple juice will hydrate you more than a mug of tea.

So when we think about it, scoring those eight glasses of water, or the equivalent through water-containing food and drink, isn’t all that difficult. However, for many of us, it is the motivation side of things that can prove to be the effort. I mean, a warm and energizing cup of coffee on a cold winter morning is so much more appealing than a cold glass of tap water, and who is going to stop and think ‘well actually…the water would hydrate me more.’ So here’s a question, what can we do to make the drinking of water more enjoyable. How can we encourage ourselves to drink more water and swap out those caffeine rich drinks for a calorie and sugar-free alternative? Well here are two great tips to encourage you to drink more water!

Motivate yourself to drink more water by:

  1. Getting yourself a water bottle – This may sound obvious, but for some people, a water bottle is not something they carry around. If you’re on the go, busy with work, dropping in at the gym or out and about, investing in a water bottle will not only save you a heck of a lot of money on drinks, but it will also ensure that you stay hydrated no matter where you go!Naturally
  2. Naturally flavored water – Add a slice of lemon or strips of cucumber to your water and allow those natural, hydrating and refreshing flavors to encourage you to drink more. Many people find it difficult to drink plenty of water because of the lack of taste – this little trick will make staying hydrated a little tastier.
